NY Firefighter Shot While Attempting to Help Injured Man

A volunteer firefighter was shot Tuesday night in Bellmore, New York, by an injured man he tried to assist, according to police.

According to a news report, a Ford pickup crashed into a utility pole. When a volunteer firefighter stopped to help the injured driver of the vehicle, the driver allegedly opened fire on the firefighter, hitting him in the back or side.

Police responded to the scene and, after seeing what had occurred, fired on the armed driver. The unidentified driver died from gunshot wounds.

The firefighter is being treated at a local hospital for nonlifethreatening injuries.
