NY Fire Kills Brother of Responding Firefighter

Volunteer firefighter Rich Zdenek was one of the first to arrive at a house fire on Long Island early Sunday morning where he almost singlehandedly extinguished the fire. Zdenek was informed by his chief moments later that his older brother Henry, had been killed in the fire. The older brother was trapped in another section of the home during the fire, according to reports from NBC New York.

The address of the home was familiar to Zdenek as a place his brother visited frequently as explained in the report:

“Friends of the elder Zdenek lived in the Campo Avenue home, and Rich Zdenek knew it was a hangout of his brother. He recognized the address on his fire beeper, and before leaving home to answer the emergency call, prayed Henry had stayed home that night.”

The report continued to say, At the burning house, Rich Zdenek charged inside, and according to his chief, “did what he was supposed to do.”
