In late December 2013, firefighters battled a fire resulting from a fuel tanker truck crash in Bellmore, New York.

The truck crashed and exploded in flames on Sunrise Highway on late Tuesday night, December 17.

Preliminary reports say that the eastbound truck rear-ended a car at the corner of Newbridge Road then rolled over on its side, ending up in a nearby parking lot.

Both drivers were able to escape their vehicles before a huge fireball erupted. More than 7,000 gallons of fuel spilled out of the tanker and seeped dangerously close to neighboring homes.

Nearly ten departments battled the fire with hoselines and foam equipment before gaining an upper hand on the fire.

Nassau County Haz Mat team were on the scene to control the spread of fuel and begin the cleanup.
