Firefighters responded to a four-alarm fire at the synagogue, Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun, on 85th Street near Lexington Avenue, in New York City Monday evening at approximately 8:30 p.m.
Approximately 170 firefighters fought for over one hour as hundreds of people observed crews bring the fire under control. The fire caused four firefighters to receive minor injuries, according to
a report from the New York Times.

Fire officials commented on the intensity of the fire
in the report
:
“It went up like that,” said Stephen L. Ruzow, chairman of the FDNY Foundation and a member of the synagogue, who saw the flames engulf the roof. “Flames were 40 feet in the air, and there were large clouds of thick black smoke.”
The cause of the fire was not known but fire officials indicated that the fire began on the roof of the structure, according to the report.
