NYC Street Renamed for Firefighter

A Brooklyn street was renamed Saturday in honor of a firefighter who went above and beyond in the aftermath of the September 11th attacks, reports NY1 (http://bit.ly/1jc89Mj)

The intersection of 85th Street at Fifth Avenue is now called “Michael Behette 9/11 Memorial Way.”

Behette was a firefighter with Ladder Company 172 in Bensonhurst.

He was on vacation in Florida on September 11, 2001 but drove through the night to help with rescue efforts.

Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano said Behette was the kind of firefighter who exemplified the values of the FDNY.

“There are streets named for those who served the city with pride and dignity and gave their lives protecting others, true heroes. Firefighter Mike Behette was one of those true heroes,” Cassano said.

Behette died of lung cancer in 2012.

His illness is believed to be connected to his time working at the World Trade Center Site.
