Fairfax County and Fairfax City (VA) units were alerted to a house fire on Tuesday afternoon. First-arriving units reported heavy smoke showing from a large, single-family home.
Firefighters first initiated an aggressive interior attack but discovered heavy and hot smoke on the third floor/attic area with zero visibility, forcing the crews to evacuate the structure.
A second alarm was sounded, bringing in more aerial ladder units and relief crews. Command ordered an exterior attack with multiple master streams from tower ladders. Once heavy fire was knocked, crews re-engaged an interior attack to fight hotspots and perform extensive overhaul.
This was the first working fire for the new Fairfax City Tower Ladder 403, which had just been placed in service on Monday evening.
