C. Walter Stickney

C. Walter Stickney, former State Fire Marshal of Oregon, died of cancer in a Mount Angel nursing home last Dec. 13. He was 67 years of age.

Stickney was in the Portland Fire Department for 25 years, retiring as battalion chief, assistant fire marshal and chief investigator.

He was named state fire marshal by Gov. Mark Hatfield in 1963 when the post was created, and held this position until 1974.

During that time, Stickney developed a comprehensive fire loss reporting system, along with a system for centralized coding and data processing. He was chairman of the NFPA fire reporting committee at the time of his death.
