Off-Duty New York Firefighter Victim of Fatal Stabbing

A 20-year-old firefighter was stabbed to death at a New Year’s party after he tried to break up a fight between two groups of guests, reports recordonline.com.

Justin Speights was rushed to Orange Regional Medical Center in the Town of Wallkill, where he was pronounced dead, said Maj. Joseph Tripodo of the state police barracks in Middletown.

Speights was a four-year member of the Silver Lake Fire Department and a Scotchtown resident.

The altercation occurred after midnight, when the gathering was in full swing at a home on Paddock Drive, a quiet residential street with large houses built on big lots. The victim and the suspect were both guests at the celebration hosted by the children of the homeowners. The parents were not at home for the party.

Tripodo said that Speights was stabbed multiple times in the torso area at the back of the house. Some people at the party pulled him into the garage and unsuccessfully tried to revive him.

Police arrived at the scene at about 1 a.m. in response to a 911 call.

The suspect is at large and police do not know his identity at this time. The weapon used in the killing has not been found.

“We do not know who the perpetrator is. Between 80 to a 120 people were at this party,” Tripodo said.

Investigators are asking anyone who attended the party and may know about the stabbing to contact state police in Middletown at 845-344-5300. Police are also asking anyone who may have taken photos or videos during the party to reach out to them.
