Little Ferry, NJ — Off-duty veteran firefighter Douglas Jansen died doing what he was known for — helping out someone in need.
Jansen, 58, fell 25 feet from a tree after it gave way while he was cutting branches for a neighbor on Franklin Street just before 3:15 p.m. on Sunday. He was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead about one hour later. Police Chief Frank Verdi and another firefighter broke the news of his serious injury to his family during his daughter’s baby shower at the firehouse.
Police had administered CPR and used a defibrillator before paramedics took Jansen to the hospital.
Jansen served in the volunteer fire department for about 40 years, twice as chief, and most recently at Hook and Ladder Company 1 on Main Street. He also served in Moonachie’s first aid and rescue squad, Verdi said.
