Madison Township (OH) officials voted to disband its volunteer fire department and enter into a contract with neighboring Hanover Volunteer Fire Department for fire and EMS service, according to a report.
The Columbus Dispatch reports that the move follows a July 1 recommendation from the township administrator that claims it will save Madison Township more than $100,000 annually and provide residents with better service.
The report says response-time data provided by the Licking County Regional 911 center indicated that Hanover fire units were arriving faster than Madison firefighters over a specific period from 2014 to 2015.
Hanover is also staffed around the clock, seven days a week with paid staff, while Madison’s station is staffed with paid part-timers only from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the report said.
