Six Parma (OH) firefighters face disciplinary action and could lose their jobs because they accused a superior of favoritism, according to a report on Cleveland.com (http://bit.ly/L8Dlqw).
The fire department brought formal departmental charges last month against the firefighters. The charges state that the six men signed a letter falsely accusing a fire department captain of favoring certain firefighters when deciding which of them to appoint to a SWAT team.
A seventh firefighter also signed the letter, but no charges were brought against him because he has since retired.
The letter, addressed to the department’s chief, suggested that the captain made up his own SWAT test and gave answers in advance to firefighters he liked, or at least advised them how to study for the test. The charges state that the six firefighters who signed the letter had no evidence to support these allegations, and go on to say that by making their allegations to the chief instead of their direct supervisor or union representative, they went outside the chain of command.
