One Dead After Fire at Home Near Bel Air

A person died in a house fire Tuesday afternoon in the Vineyard Oak community a few miles north of Bel Air, fire investigators said.

Dispatched to the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company at 3:16 p.m. as a “dwelling fire with rescue,” the fire was reported “under control” within 20 minutes, but with a rescue still in progress. Several area fire companies responded.

The two-story, brick front home, in the 1100 block of Saddleback Way off of Route 543, appeared to have significant interior damage.

Neighbors at the scene reported seeing large amounts of smoke coming from the windows before fire equipment arrived.

Senior Deputy Fire Marshal Oliver Alkire confirmed at the scene that firefighters found a person dead in the home’s basement.

Alkire said one of the homeowners had arrived home, opened the front door, found smoke coming out of the house and called 911.

Harford County Sheriff’s Office deputies who were nearby responded and tried to enter the home from both the front and back, Alkire said, but were overwhelmed by the smoke.
