One Dead, Six Hospitalized in Waterford (NY) Fire

A fire early Wednesday morning at 54 Broad Street in Waterford claimed one life and sent six people to the hospital.

The fire broke out around 3:45 a.m. in a building that houses two apartments above Bill’s Card Shaq. According to the Waterford fire chief, none of the firefighters sustained injuries, WNYT reports.

“On arrival we had a heavy fire condition throughout the 3 floors of the building. the fire in the rear was in the air for 30-40 feet and black smoke coming from the front of the building,” Chief Don Baldwin told reporters at the scene. “My crews made it up to the 2nd floor area to try to search for the unaccounted for victim they couldn’t go any further we had to pull out.”

The structure has significant fire and water damage, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
