Oregon offers certification for wildland interface firefighters

As of January 1, 1999, eligible structural firefighters who have met the recently approved certification standards for wildland interface firefighting may receive certification. Oregon`s Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) has established four certification levels: (1) Interface Firefighters, (2) Interface Apparatus Officer/Engine Boss, (3) Task Force/ Strike Team Leader, and (4) Division-Group Supervisor. Training for these certification levels, which is voluntary, incorporates several National Wildfire Coordinating Group courses. Structural firefighters must successfully complete classroom and field training (task performance guides) requirements before certification will be awarded. For additional information, contact Eriks Gabliks, assistant director; DPSST; 550 N. Monmouth Avenue; Monmouth, OR 97361. n
