A 50-year-old man riding in the backseat of an SUV was killed Tuesday when the vehicle burst into flames after running over a piece of metal on the Grand Central Parkway in Queens, reports The New York Daily News.
The driver, a 26-year-old man, and a 25-year-old female who was in the passenger seat, were able to escape the vehicle. The Toyota Highlander’s gas tank was ruptured by the metal object, causing the vehicle to catch fire in an eastbound lane near 31st St. in Astoria shortly before 1:40 p.m., police said. The driver managed to pull over onto the highway’s shoulder before he and the front-seat passenger escaped.
The passenger who died perished in the car, authorities said. His name was not immediately released. The driver and front-seat passenger were taken to New York Hospital Queens and were in stable condition, police said.
