Pennsylvania Fire Kills Man, Leaves Family Homeless

A 2-Alarm Fire destroyed a house located at 626 Grace St in Williamsport Pa. on Thursday, February 3rd, according to reports from the Williamsport Sun-Gazette. The aftermath leaves a family homeless and one man dead.

City Fire Chief C. Dean Heinbach said the fire easily was spotted by firefighters as they pulled out of headquarters on nearby Walnut Street. Firefighters arrived at approximately noon equipped with SCBA and ran hose through the front door to immediately attack the fire.

The first team of City firefighters received assistance from the Old Lycoming Township, Loyalsock Township, Montoursville and South Williamsport volunteers.”The basement, all the way to the first and second floors, was involved in fire. The second-floor stairway gave out, and then the second floor started to cave in. Eventually, some of the roof caved in,” Heinbach said.

All firefighters were ordered out approximately 20 minutes later due to the dangerous escalation of the fire. The majority of the fire was extinguished within an hour, but firefighters worked after 4 p.m to douse hot spots in the structure.

The owner, 41-year-old Kenneth Segraves, was found dead by firefighters inside the home after the property was destroyed. Lycoming County Coroner Charles E. Kiessling Jr. confirmed that the victim’s body was found on the first floor in the kitchen at the back of his house at approximately 3:30 p.m., three hours after firefighters arrived on scene.

The origin and cause of the fire remain under investigation, officials confirmed. The local chapter of the American Red Cross will provided emergency assistance for the displaced family.
