Petroleum Waste Fire Burns at Landfill

Tennessee-A private landfill containing diesel-fuel-soaked soil at its base had spread over an area 100 yards long and 75 feet wide by the time firefighters arrived at the fireground on October 24. Water tankers called to the scene continuously dumped water into a 7,000-gallon portable dump tank for use by firefighters at the top of a hill above the fire. Firefighters at the bottom of the hill battled the fire at its base.

Fire officials were working with Tennessee Emergency Management Agency officials to determine whether hazardous materials officials needed to respond to the scene.
