A four-year-old boy has died in a fire in a West Philadelphia (PA) public-housing apartment building, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Hospitalized in the fire were a younger boy, a woman and one other adult male, said Executive Fire Chief Richard Davison. He did not have information on their ages or names.
Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers, who is at the scene, said the woman injured was the children’s mother, who along with a male neighbor was able to rescue one of the children from the fire. The 5-year-old was pronounced dead at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, he said.
Firefighters were called to the building shortly before 1:30 p.m. and saw heavy smoke pouring from one of the floors. The fire was put under control in about half an hour.
The cause of the fire, which apparently started on the sixth floor, is under investigation.
