Photos: Fatal New Bedford (MA) Structure Fire

Firefighters responded earlier this week to a fire that killed two people and displaced many others in New Bedford, Massachusetts.

According to the New Bedford (MA) Fire Department, the department responded on Monday, April 19, 2021, at 12:13 a.m. to 1279 and 1283 Acushnet Avenue for a reported structure fire.

On arrival, crews were met heavy fire extending up the exterior walls and into the roof and attic of both structures. Both mixed-use residential/commercial structure were separated by an alley. Command immediately called for a second alarm. Once crews began advancing to the third floor and attic in both buildings, crews discovered the fire had already entered the stairways. A general alarm call back was initiated along with Acushnet and Fairhaven Fire Departments along with Dartmouth Fire Districts 1 and 3 providing station coverage.

Two occupants were killed and approximately 40 people displaced. One firefighter was also transported to the hospital for evaluation.

The fire fire originated in the alley between both buildings and the cause is being investigated.
