A 67-year-old man was killed in a Pontaic (MI) house fire Wednesday, the first day after the nearly 180-year-old Pontiac Fire Department had been absorbed by the Waterford Fire Department.
Newly reorganized fire crews arrived on the scene in minutes, according to a report from the Detroit Free Press (http://on.freep.com/AuYFIH).
Waterford Township fire marshal Matthew Covey told the paper call of an air conditioner fire came in at 9:30 p.m., and firefighters were on scene at 9:43 p.m. Heavy smoke was billowing from the first floor of the two-story home, originating in the living room.
Neighbors reportedly tried to rescue the wheelchair-bound man, but they were unsuccessful. Firefighters found him unresponsive in the kitchen. There allegedly were no working smoke detectors in the home. Smoking is the suspected cause of the fire.
