Program to Honor Md. Fire Fighters
A new program that will honor Maryland’s Fire Fighter of the Year plus individual fire fighters of the year from the state’s more than 300 fire departments is being sponsored by the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company in cooperation with the Maryland State Firemen’s Association.
“The program will be open to all fire fighters in the State of Maryland, volunteer and career members including all federal fire departments,” said Roy L. Wood, award program chairman and past president of the Maryland State Firemen’s Association.
Schlitz has sponsored similar programs in Wisconsin and New Jersey. In those states, the awards have been viewed as beneficial to fire fighters by increasing public awareness of their personal contributions to fire safety, according to Schlitz’s Robert G. Frechette, Milwaukee, Wis., program manager.
“Each fire fighter of the year within a fire company will receive a plaque,” Wood said, “and will automatically become a candidate for the statewide award. The winner will receive the grand trophy.”
