Program to Save Minneapolis Firefighter Jobs in Jeopardy

A former Minneapolis councilman’s noble plan to save the jobs of two Minneapolis firefighters may be coming to an end. The councilman’s original plan called for firefighters to do the work of boarding-up vacant properties that was previously conducted by private contractors.

The program may be ending due to costs exceeding $300,000 without comparable revenue. The firefighters’ union president reacted with the following statement regarding the program:

“They’ve got to shut it down. If it’s costing the City money, then we can’t do it because with our staffing levels, they need to staff for the rigs. So I hope they would dispose of this program and put it out for bid.”

The program is being discussed by a council committee for discussion in the 2012 budget.
