A recently released report takes a look at the conditions at the 2015 Twisp (WA) fire that killed three Forest Service firefighters and severely injured another.
Released Friday, the joint federal and state report examined factors in the deadly wildland fire that led to the deaths of Richard Wheeler, Andrew Zajac and Tom Zbyszewski on August 19. Daniel Lyon, Jr. was badly burned in the fire and recently released from a Seattle hospital, and three other firefighters working for the Washington Department of Natural Resources were also injured.
According to a Seattle Times review of the report, winds dramatically fanned the fire, pushing walls of flames and smoke onto a team of firefighters, catching them off-guard and forcing them to retreat blindly down a winding dirt road to their deaths.
