A news report from CBS 4 examined the large number of Miami-Dade (FL) firefighters who have fallen victim to that “silent killer,” cancer.
Reporters talked to, among others, Captain Bob Carpenter, a Fire Engineering contributor and FDIC instructor, who spoke of four firefighters being diagnosed with cancer in one week.
“In 2013 in the month of December, six members were diagnosed with cancer within that month,” Carpenter said.
Firefighter Health: Inhaling Cancer
The report also looked at the case of Miami-Dade Firefighter Paul Hoar, 42, who had to have two feet of his colon removed along with a tumor. He is in his second round of receiving eight months of chemotherapy for colon cancer.
The report parallels one that profiled firefiighters in the Chicago area who were also suffering from cancer, and the NIOSH study on the susceptibility of firefighters to cancer.
