Retain Academy Advisers

Because of delay in the appointment of its members, the Advisory Committee on Fire Training and Education for the National Fire Academy has received a one-year extension of its life. The committee was established in January 1976 and was slated to go out of existence by last January 14. However, the 18 public members of the committee, chaired by Academy Superintendent David M. McCormack, were not all appointed until January 1977.

The extension to January 31, 1979, gives the committee the two years of working time that is specified in the Fire Prevention and Control Act of 1974. The act directs the committee to inquire into the desirability of setting up a means of accreditation for fire training and education courses and programs. If the committee advises accreditation, then it is empowered to make recommendations as to the part the National Fire Academy should play in the accreditation system. The committee will make its report to the administrator of National Fire Prevention and Control Administration. If the report is submitted before next January 31, then the committee will cease to exist upon submission of its report.
