Retired Firefighter Killed in Storm-Related NY Death

A retired firefighter and Korean War hero died Wednesday in New York City due to conditions caused by Hurricane Sandy.

George P. O’Regan, 79, a retired Fire Department of New York firefighter, was killed after a fall in a dark stairway in a senior housing facility in Staten Island, according to the Staten Island Advance (http://bit.ly/RB1ZnL). He was declared Staten Island’s 20th storm-related death.

He suffered a fatal spinal fracture due to blunt impact that happened when he slipped and fell in a wet, dark hallway, according to police spokesman. Power in the building was out when the former firefighter tripped.
