San Antonio (TX) Firefighter Dies After Being Struck by Vehicle While Operating at Scene

A San Antonio (TX) firefighter has died after being struck by a vehicle during fireground operations, according to reports.

According to the San Antonio Express News, firefighting crews with Platform 3 were responding to smoke coming from the lobby of an area Comfort Suites Tuesday morning when the member was hit by a car. Crews were reportedly replacing gear on their rig when the incident occurred.

KSAT reported that the member, who was critically injured and transported, has passed away. The member was identified by  San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood as Firefighter Greg Garza, 49, a 17-year veteran of the department. KSAT reported that Firefighter Garza  suffered a traumatic arrest at the scene and was transported, later succumbing to his injury.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration report, on Tuesday, October 15, 2019, Firefighter Greg Garza responded to an electrical incident at the Comfort Suites.  Garza returned to the apparatus to retrieve some equipment and was attempting to exit the fire apparatus when he tripped getting out of the truck and was hit by an oncoming vehicle.  He went into traumatic arrest, was transported, and passed away at the hospital.
