Savannah firefighters are undergoing specialized training on the water, reports wjcl.com
Nearly 20 firefighters are undergoing three certification courses as part of the department’s new Maritime Training Program.
The more than 140 hours of training will help prepare the crews for the arrival of their new 50-foot fire boat, which will enhance their ability to respond to fires and other emergencies along the river.
“What’s really pushed this of course was the sugar refinery fire, also the GPA fire,” said James Vickers, special operations division of Savannah Fire. “This boat is going to give us capabilities to do things we can not do here right now and that’s going to be pump a large amount of water and be able to have a platform on the water to be able to operate for.”
The new 50-foot boat which is paid for by the 2014 Port Security Grant is expected to be delivered to Savannah Fire sometime in August.
