At least 17 people were injured when scaffolding at a building under demolition collapsed onto a bus yesterday in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City.

The preponderance of scaffolding, especially in neighborhoods dense with buildings, offers many challenges to firefighters, as Dan Sheridan noted in a recent First-Due Battalion Chief column. Beside the potential for collapse, scaffolding can also obscure firefighters’ size-up of buildings on the fireground.
