The Scranton (PA) Fire Department would be cut by twenty percent under the proposed city budget, losing 29 firefighter positions. In addition, property taxes would rise by 29 percent, according to a report from WNEP (http://bit.ly/uPRMRX).
The city’s mayor said a recent court ruling awarding firefighters and police higher salaries means the city cannot afford current fire staffing levels.
The head of firefighters’ union blasted the move, which he claimed will make citizens less safe.
