Firefighters responded to the two-story home around 4:30 a.m. in the 7400 block of Dartmouth Avenue with heavy fire showing from the roof, according to officials.

The students were awoken by their smoke alarm and were able to escape the fire and were not injured, officials say. The County Citizen Services Unit and the American Red Cross are assisting the students with temporary shelter.

Firefighters had the fire extinguished within 45 minutes of arrival. One firefighter sustained minor burn injuries to both wrists and was transported to the Burn Unit at Med Star Washington Hospital Center.
