Smoke Detector
Here’s a good case for smoke detectors, despite a less than adequate placement:
George Mowery of Boise, Idaho purchased a smoke detector at a local discount house because it was on sale and the manufacturer was offering a $5 rebate. He promptly stuffed the device, still in its box, inside a linen closet.
A muffled whine wakened Mowery and his wife September 2 about 2:30 a.m. The entire family, including sons Jon, 13, and David, 10, escaped unharmed as flames destroyed the kitchen and smoke blackened the entire house.
The refrigerator had malfunctioned and eventually flames consumed the walls and cabinets. Boise Fire Captain Marv Reinhart credited the smoke detector with saving the family.
Mowery, a Nazarene minister, is now a believer in smoke detectors.
“An angel must have blown some smoke into that box,” said the preacher.
