Son Charged in Father’s Death After Setting OR Duplex Fire

Salem (OR) – John Anthony Duran, 36, was charged with first-degree manslaughter Thursday for allegedly starting the fire that caused the death of his father at their duplex just north of Jefferson.

Candido Duran, 81, died in the fire, which was reported about 3 a.m. Wednesday in the 15100 block of the Jefferson Highway. His son was arrested in connection with the death hours later.

First-degree manslaughter is a Measure 11 crime that carries a mandatory minimum prison sentence of 10 years.

Neighbors near the yellow duplex reported hearing explosions or loud popping noises when the fire broke out.
