The Region 23 complex fires in Dawes and Sioux counties (SD) have burned more than 87,555 acres and containment is at 47 percent, reports Rapid City Journal.
A cold front moving in tonight (Saturday) is also expected to help in fire suppression efforts, but high winds and dry fuels mean that danger remains, a fire official said.
Meanwhile the Wellnitz Fire, in Sheridan County northwest of Hay Springs, has burned about 60,000 acres, but a containment line is in place.
All fire officials told the newspaper that cooperation and teamwork that allowed the fires to be brought under control, despite unforgiving conditions of hot weather, dry fuels, wind, and rugged terrain.
