st. Louis (MO) Intends to Lay Off Up to 60 Firefighters

The St. Louis (MO) Fire Department may lay off between 30 and 60 firefighters and close two fire stations, the first layoffs in recent history, according to a report on stltoday.com. Although the firefighters union presented a deal to reduce pension costs to the city after months of negotiations, a city official said the plan was probably not enough to stave off the cuts. Union officials remain hopeful that a deal can be reach to stall layoffs for a year, giving them enough time to reconfigure firefighter pensions and pay.
