People who want to become St. Paul firefighters can apply this month, the city said Thursday. They’re highly coveted positions — the last time the city offered the firefighter test was four years ago, and more than 2,500 people applied, reports Pioneer Press (http://bit.ly/1rKqgte)
The city is putting more of an emphasis on hiring St. Paul residents; the City Council recently approved adding 10 points to the final score of candidates who have been residents for at least one year as of the May 28 application deadline. Applications are due at 4:30 p.m. that day.
There will be two information sessions about the hiring process — May 10 from 10 a.m. to noon at Central High School and May 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Washington Technology Magnet School.
Applicants must meet these requirements by Dec. 31: be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or GED, and have a driver’s license. All St. Paul firefighters are Emergency Medical Technicians, and successful firefighter candidates must be state-certified EMTs at the time of hire. More information and the online application is at stpaul.gov/firefighter.
