SUNNYVALE, Calif. – Sunnyvale City Manager Gary Luebbers has announced a new director for the City’s Department of Public Safety (DPS). Frank Grgurina will take control of DPS on November 28, becoming the Chief in a department that combines law enforcement, fire services and emergency medical services. DPS currently has 204 sworn officers.
Grgurina comes to Sunnyvale from Fremont, where he has served since 1989. Since 2006, Grgurina has served as the patrol captain, a position that is equivalent to Sunnyvale’s deputy chiefs, and he spent a year as the administrative captain. Grgurina has filled in as chief in Fremont nearly four dozen times.
”Frank brings the kind of leadership we seek in Sunnyvale,” said City Manager Luebbers. “His 23 years of experience in Fremont have given him a depth of experience that will be an asset to the City. Frank is an effective, experienced leader who will bring a fresh perspective to our nationally-recognized Department of Public Safety.”
Grgurina says he is looking forward to taking on a new command. “Sunnyvale’s Department of Public Safety has an excellent history with dedicated officers,” he said. “The DPS combined-service model is unique, but has proven to be effective in serving the community, and I look forward to the opportunity to lead the department into the future.”
