Starting with chapters on early management theory and the impact of behaviorial science, the book progresses to a discussion of management by objectives. The discussion then turns to the application of management principles and techniques to fire service operations.

Fireground command is viewed in the light of management goals and techniques. Strategy development, communications and leadership styles on the fireound are among the topics evaluated in this chapter. Other chapters deal with personnel management, the importance of training to management, and the management of a fire department’s physical resources.

The author, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Colorado Medical Center, considers both the techniques and thought processes of bombers. The book is mainly about bombers, as only one chapter and parts of two others discuss arsonists.

However, the book discusses the various types of bombers, from revolutionists to compulsive bombers, as well as the materials used in making bombs and where they are placed. The disposal of bombs and the protection of property are also discussed.

Starting with a review of basic grammar, the author then shows how conciseness and clarity are important to effective communications. Separate chapters provide formats for developing informal reports, formal reports and letters.

The chapter on letters is particularly useful in providing suggestions for persuading the recipient to do something or for denying a request without causing further irritation.

The Great Fire of London in 1666, the fire experiences of the colonists in America and the fire fighters among the signers of the Declaration of Independence are among the chapter topics in this review of the first two centuries of the battle against fire in the Colonies and the early years of the United States. Unusual in any history of fire is a chapter on fire at sea that tells of the use of fe ships against wooden warships.

The book is profusely illustrated with both drawings and photos. Many of the illustrations are in color.
