The FLORIDA FIRE CHIEFS ASSOCIATION won Summit honors in the 1999 Associations Advance America Awards for its Statewide Fire Rescue Disaster Response Plan. Developed with the Florida Emergency Mananagement Association after Hurricane Andrew, the plan is designed to manage large-scale fire/rescue deployments. It was tested during the 1998 wildland fires. More than 10,000 firefighters from the United States and Canada came to assist in fighting the fires, and there were no firefighter or civilian fatalities.
