The Professional Volunteer Fire Department: Managing Cancer Risk

Tom Merrill, Tom Bell, Rick Steele

Greensburg (PA) Volunteer Fire Department Chief Tom Bell and President Rick Steele join host Tom Merrill to discuss the steps that have been taken to help mitigate the cancer risk and carcinogen exposure in their agency. Their simple yet highly effective plan is something all departments can learn from. It was not always easy and they had many hurdles to cross, but their resilience and determination to succeed is a testament to the professional culture prevalent throughout this volunteer fire department.

Chief Bell was also honored at the recent International Association of Fire Chiefs Annual Conference and Expo as Volunteer Fire Chief of the Year in recognition of not only his cancer prevention program, but his many other initiatives that emphasize teamwork, skills and core values (a.k.a. TOTAL PROFESSIONALISM).
