The PFANJ/IAFF has received reports indicating the possible malfunction of certain Thermal Imaging Cameras (TICs) when used in close proximity to a two-way radio.
It appears that when a TIC is used and a two-way radio mic is keyed up, either by the user or by someone in close proximity to a camera user, the TIC screen blanks momentarily. The problem is said to last for the duration of the forward communication and upon release of the radio mic key, the picture returns. In some cases the picture remains intact, but is interrupted by lines through the picture for the duration of the forward radio transmission. There are no reports to date of problems with TICs when receiving communications, just transmitting.
At the very least, this problem might cause TIC users to have to reorient themselves in relation to their location in an occupancy.
The PFANJ/IAFF urges companies that own TICs to test all handheld radios in association with all TICs. Have the TIC user employ his or her radio, and have a member close by do the same.
