Thermal Vegetation Fire Forces Evacuation

A fire blazing since 10:15 a.m. has spread to 75 acres near Thermal, according to the Riverside County Fire Department, reports

Sunbird Mobile Home Park has been evacuated as firefighters battle a vegetation fire that has grown to 30 acres near Avenue 66 and Harrison Street. Two firefighters are being evaluated for non-life threatening injuries.

An evacuation center has been set up at Coachella Valley High School — one at Desert Mirage High School was moved around 4:00 p.m., according to the fire department — and Sun Bus Transit Agency has sent an air-conditioned vehicle to help rehabilitate firefighters.

The fire was reported about 10:15 a.m., according to Cal Fire. The fire is burning heavy vegetation, including mulch and Tamarisk trees.

Sunbird Mobile Home Park is near Echol Road, about 100 yards north of the fire. There have been no reports of injured residents.
