Firefighters raced to a boat repair facility after a fire broke out at the Narrows Marina, north of Chambers Bay, reports KOMO News (http://kng5.tv/1K4chKZ)
The smoke was billowing from Aaron’s Marine Service, where 12-20 boats were destroyed, the Tacoma Fire Department said.
Witnesses saw a huge smoke cloud around 5 p.m., and Fox News broadcasted aerial video of the fire during the U.S. Open. An odd plastic smell lingered over the course, photographer Fred Veinfurt said.
The looming mushroom cloud stole the show – for a while, at least – as the contenders played the course in the tournament’s third round Saturday evening, the Seattle PI reported.
Waterfront restaurants, Boathouse 19 and Steamers Seafood Cafe, were forced to close as responders shut off power to the area.
Firefighters managed to save dozens of boats moored next door by creating a curtain of water between the building and boatyard. A couple of yachts were parked there on the water, and may have some damage, Tacoma Fire said.
Investigators are on scene to determine what caused the fire. No injuries were reported.
