Firefighters from around the nation flocked to Watertown, Massachusetts, for the funeral service for fallen Boston firefighter Lieutenant Edward Walsh Jr., who was killed along with his colleague Michael Kennedy in a nine-alarm fire last week.
The Boston Globe had photos and video from the ceremony (http://b.globe.com/1or8XB0), and the entire mass was covered live by WDHD-TV. The coverage showed the streets crowded with firefighters paying tribute to Walsh. In some cases, firefighters stood shoulder-to-shoulder four or more rows deep. Many will be present for the funeral for Kennedy, which will take place tomorrow.
The Globe‘s profile of Walsh described him the similarities he shared with his father, also a firefighter, who served in Watertown. They were “big guys, quiet guys, behind-the-scenes kind of guys who didn’t want acknowledgment for anything,” according to Walsh’s sister, Kathy Malone.

The Boston Mayor Marty Walsh was among the dignitaries at the funeral, as well as International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) General President Harold Schaitberger. Toledo (OH) Fire Chief Luis Santiago, whose department lost two members in a fire in January, was also there and spoke to reporters (video courtesy the Boston Herald).
