According to a report from AL.com, three Birmingham (AL) Fire and Rescue Service (BFRS) firefighters were injured, one seriously, after a porch collapsed while they fought a duplex fire in the city Thursday night.
BFRS responded to the 1200 block of Rev. Abraham Woods Jr. Boulevard shortly before 10 p.m. Thursday for the structure fire. BFRS Battalion Chief Jackie Hicks said the home was vacant at the time of the incident.
On arrival, a large amount of fire was showing in duplex. Crews made a quick entry and attempted a knockdown from the interior. On their way out of the duplex, the porch collapsed, trapping three firefighters under some debris, and a Mayday was then called.
Two firefighters suffered minor injures, while the third suffered more serious injures. Hicks said the three were transported to UAB Hospital, and all are expected to recover.
As of 11:30 p.m. Thursday, BFRS crews were still working to extinguish hotspots. Hicks said they would conduct searches to make sure no victims were inside.
