A three-alarm fire broke out in the Seventh Ward on Friday night and was initially reported as a two-alarm fire but was later classified by officials as a three-alarm incident, reports wdsu.com.
Neighbors reported seeing transients going in and out of the abandoned houses. It’s unclear what started the fire but investigators are trying to determine if squatters might have caused the fire. The fire chief said property owners should make sure that unoccupied houses are secure.
Witnesses at the scene told WDSU that the fire involved several homes. Two homes, which the New Orleans Fire Department said were abandoned, were destroyed in the fire. All that was left of one house were the steps and its porch.
The third home suffered severe damage.
Fifty-five firefighters responded to the fire, officials said.
The NOFD said no injuries or fatalities were reported in the fire.
