Three Children, Mother Die in Pittsburgh (PA) Fire

Three children and their mother were killed in a fire in Homewood neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, early today.

Firefighters responded a little after midnight to the scene, where they soon got word that four people might be trapped inside. The fire reportedly began when a mattress caught fire, according to a report on post-gazette.com (http://bit.ly/ufWgkB), but the cause is still under investigation.

The deceased woman’s husband apparently tried to reenter the home during the fire but was driven back by the flames. A search by firefighters turned up the four victims’ bodies.

The fire gutted the upper floors of the row house and damaged the units next to it. A city inspection earlier this year found no problems and that smoke alarms were functioning.
