Three Houston Firefighters Burned in Apartment Fire; Gear Melted During Mayday

A fire at an apartment complex in Sunnyside early Tuesday morning resulted in injuries to three Houston firefighters.

The fire, reported just before 5:30 a.m. on Jermese St., caused significant damage, Click2Houston reports.

Three firefighters sustained second- and third-degree burns while attempting to rescue people from the fire, which damaged at least two apartments.

The firefighters, who are members of Station 46, were performing a primary search of the building when they became trapped due to the intensity of the fire and called a Mayday. Their helmets and air packs were melted during the rescue operation before another firefighter broke through a door to rescue the trapped crew members.

The injured firefighters, Senior Captain Edward Escamilla, Firefighter Darren Jones, and Firefighter Jonathan Guzman, are reportedly in good spirits but emotionally shaken by the close call.
