Two Children Killed, Two Others Injured in PA House Fire

A house fire in Philadelphia’s Strawberry Mansion neighborhood just after 4 a.m. Monday killed two children, ages 2 and 4, and injured two others, as reported by CBS affiliate 3Philly.

After arriving on scene to the 2400 block of North Myrtlewood Street, firefighters initially had trouble finding a working hydrant. Witnesses say crews checked for several adjacent blocks before they were able to locate a working hydrant. One neighbor said the nearby hydrants were out of commission for the past couple of months and he has called the city to get them fixed, but a number of them are still down.

Fire officials say the fire began on the first floor and worked its way up to the second floor. Rain and heavy winds hampered the efforts of the 60 firefighters, medics, and support personnel who responded to the scene, and it took crews an hour to bring the fire under control.
