Two Dead in Firefighting Plane Crash

Colorado Springs, CO — Two crew members on a U.S. Air Force C-130 plane died in a crash Sunday night while battling one of several Western wildfires that have scorched hundreds of thousands of acres, family members said.

The crash occurred while the crew was fighting the White Draw Fire near Edgemont, South Dakota, the U.S. Northern Command said.

Family members identified the deceased as Lt. Col. Paul Mikeal and Master Sgt. Robert Cannon. Military officials said there were deaths in the crash and that there were six crew members on the plane, but gave no specific information about the deaths.

On Saturday, Mikeal told reporters that he was looking forward to helping out in the effort to stop the growing fires.

A hospital official at South Dakota’s Rapid City Regional Hospital on Monday night said two other crew members were critically injured in the crash and identified one as Josh Marlowe.
